Not
Quite Lobster Lovers

I love reading book dedications. It gives me a glimpse into the
author’s heart—into the type of person she is.
I also spend plenty of time writing my own. A dedication is a special
thing—an opportunity to recognize people who have made an impact on my life
while I’ve written a particular book.
Where Two Hearts Meet, my latest
novel set on Prince Edward Island, is dedicated to my sister, Hannah. On the
page I thank her for being my friend and traveling companion. And for only
making me eat three bites of that lobster.
And in case you were wondering—there’s definitely a story there.
It began in 2010 when my mom and I set off for Prince Edward Island,
home of Anne of Green Gables. My mom
had introduced me to Anne when I was twelve and at almost thirty, I decided to
introduce her to the island. So we jetted away for a five-day adventure through
Anne’s Land. Only the incessant stories that followed piqued the interest of
the rest of the family, and my sister joined us on the next visit.
As tourists to the island do, we discovered there’s so much more to PEI
than Anne’s Land.
On our third trip, my sister and I decided we were in the mood for
adventure. So we signed up for a lobster fishing expedition. My mom—not an
intrepid seawoman—decided being on a small boat in the open water might make
her dizzy and ruin the rest of her stay. So she’d do something with a little
firmer footing.
My sister and I were not fans of that plan, so we nudged and prodded
until the day of our fishing trip.
The sun rose over calm water. Mom was feeling good. And there was one
spot left on the boat. What other sign did we need? We bought a ticket for mom,
stashed her on Captain Mark’s little fishing boat and set sail for parts
unknown.
Okay, actually the parts were well known. And we never came close to
leaving the protected waters of Charlottetown Harbor, a nearly landlocked inlet.
But the water was smooth and the wind cool as we tooled around, reeling
in lobster and crab traps. Captain Mark, a real-life PEI lobster fisherman,
taught us about the lifecycle of lobsters, how they shed and eat their own
shells, and what it takes to be a maritime lobster fisherman. (Newsflash—the
license alone can cost over a quarter of a million dollars!) We were
enthralled. (And guess who loved it most of all? Mom, of course.)
Fast forward two years, and we were back on PEI. And, of course, we
signed up for another boat trip with Captain Mark on his Top Notch Tour. Once
again we reeled in lobsters and examined crabs. But this time, I decided to
hold a lobster. Lovely idea. Terrible idea.
I was doing fine until the one pounder started flapping his tail
against the underside of my arm. It smacked me a few times, clearly trying to break
free. His beady little eyes were imploring me to release him back into the
water, and his antenna wiggled around while his tail kept beating on my arm.
Well, I screamed and nearly dropped the little guy. Thankfully Captain Mark
came to my rescue and put the lobster back in his home. I was saved and the
lobster was safe and we enjoyed a lovely day.
I’m not sure who suggested it, but someone had a brilliant idea that
night to eat lobster. None of us had
ever had it, having spent most of our lives in landlocked states. What a lovely
idea.
Terrible idea.
So that night, after being nearly beaten up by a flailing lobster, I
found myself eye-to-beady-eye with another one. Only this one was too dead to
flop around, but, I swear, his eyes stared me down.
I looked at him for a long while. Then I stared at the pinchers they
gave me to break the shell. Then I thought about how he ate his own shell at
least a few times over the years. And then I wondered if the lobster I’d nearly
dropped had been his cousin, and all of a sudden I couldn’t do it. An island
delicacy, and I couldn’t even chew it. Suddenly my stomach rolled, I put my
fork down, and I was done.
That was the most expensive dinner roll I’ve ever had. But my sister
didn’t tease me too much, thus the dedication to her.
It should be noted that she ordered pasta—hold the lobster.
